It is located at Salna, Gazipur. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University was established in 1998 as a public university with an act (Act no. 16) promulgated by the government of Bangladesh. The university was established by transforming the Institute of Post Graduate Studies in Agriculture (IPSA). IPSA was established as Bangladesh College of Agricultural Science (BCAS) in 1983 as an academic organ of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) and academically affiliated with Bangladesh Agricultural University until 1991. In 1991, IPSA was made an autonomous institution. Henceforth, IPSA started its true course credit-based MS and PhD programs. The graduate program of IPSA was developed by a team of IPSA teachers led by Prof. L. M. Eisgruver of the Oregon State University (OSU), USA under the cooperation of JICA-USAID-GOB. Its academic excellence mainly relies on its efficient academia and course-credit based trimester system of education that strictly follows academic calendar which of course has guaranteed timely completion of academic programs. The university maintains strong linkage with various higher educational institutions, universities, and research organizations at regional and global levels to conduct globally competitive research using frontier technologies, especially in agriculture. The university is guided by the philosophy for enhancing the farmers ability and other stakeholders by generating, sharing and imparting advanced knowledge, experiences along with effective application methods and techniques. The university offers Bachelor of Science (BS) in Agriculture, Fisheries, Agricultural Economics & Rural Development and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. The university also offers Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in 27 (twenty seven) departments under 4 (four) faculties out of total 36 departments of the university. The Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies manages the programs of MS and PhD.

With the passage of time, the university widens its areas of education and research in the most modern fields. Example may be of setting up the Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (IBGE), while a Faculty of Forest and Environment is under the process of establishment.  Another two institutes namely, Institute of Climate Change (ICC) and Institute of Food Safety and Processing (IFSP) are under the process of operation.

The university has already achieved remarkable success within its short span and continues to build up its future on solid ground with new initiatives. Over the last two decades, the university developed a good number of high yielding crop varieties (50) and their relevant production technologies. Out of these evolved technologies, the potential ones have been transferred/ disseminated to the end users through outreach activities of the university. These in an integrated way have raised the university to the level of Center of Excellence.
