About University

Traditional Begum Badrunnesa Government Women's College started its journey in 1948 as a government college

The college has been playing a leading role in the field of women's education since its inception. Many students of this college have earned reputation as national leaders, scientists, artists, writers, educators, doctors, engineers and administrators in their careers. Their significant contributions in the national and international spheres have brought glory to the college. The college was established as Eden School and College in 1940 at the then Eden Building in East Bengal towards the end of British rule. After the partition of the country in 1948 it was shifted to Bakshi Bazar number seven and from that year the college started its journey as the first government college. That is why the college was established in 1948, but till 1964 the college was known as Eden College. Later, when the degree branch was opened in the new building of Azimpur, the new building was called Eden College and the famous Eden College of Bakshi Bazar was first known as Govt.Intermediate College. It was named Dhaka Government Women's College after the introduction of degree courses from 1968. Later in 1974, after the death of Begum Badrunnessa, the first state minister of education of Bangladesh, the college was named after her as Begum Badrunnessa Government Women's College. She has done many constructive works for the welfare of women society. Begum Badrunnessa received the Queen Elizabeth Coronation Medal for her social service in 1953 and the Independence Day Award posthumously in 1999.

Its activities are being conducted smoothly in a quiet and safe environment inside the walled Badrunnessa College. The college has well-equipped library, 2 libraries, computer laboratory, auditorium and a playground for modern and up-to-date teaching. This institution has already been awarded the prestigious seat at the national level and was awarded the status of the best college in Dhaka Division in 2002. The current Principal Prof. Sabikun Nahar has continued to make this educational institution successful in various aspects through tireless efforts since taking charge as the leader of this college. There is an intensive monitoring committee (Nipak) and 2 tutorial tests per academic year to improve the education of students of higher secondary level. Besides, the vice-principal of the college. Shayla Nasreen is working tirelessly for the welfare of students. As a result, the reputation of Begum Badrunnesa Government Women's College as an excellent institution for women's education, located in the heart of Dhaka metropolis, is increasing.
