About University

During the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal, Sir George Campbell, with the approval of the Madrasa Reforms committee, three new madrasas were established in Dhaka, Chittagong and Rajshahi in 1874 on the model of Calcutta Alia Madrasah with the money of Mohsin Fund.

The newly established madrasas were named Mohsiniya Madrasas in honor of Haji Mohammad Mohsin, nevertheless the Madrasas established in Dhaka became widely known as Dhaka Madrasas. These were the first government educational institutions for Muslims in Bangladesh during the British rule. Before that, according to a government decision in July 1873, a grant of 10,000 taka per year was arranged for the Dhaka Madrasah from the Mohsin Fund. For 42 years, all expenses of the Dhaka Madrasa were met from the Mohsin Fund. On November 16, 1915, a government order entrusted the responsibility of bearing the cost of the madrasa to the Bengal government. In 1880, under the supervision of the first principal, Maulana Obaidullah Al Obaidy, the madrasa building was built according to Muslim architecture. This building was designed by Major Man. Engineers Vivian and Scott built the new building according to that design. Engineer Rakhal Chandra Das helped them in this work. He arranged for English classes to be opened soon after the establishment of the madrasa and Babu Rajendra Mohan Dutt was the first headmaster of the English department (later the Anglo-Persian department). His name was engraved on a white stone plaque by the students after his death on the northern wooden staircase of the main building of the college. The madrasa had seven classes. Only Arabic students studied in the Arabic department. English students studied in the English Department (later Anglo-Persian Department). This department used to teach up to Entras. Students from here took the entrance exam for the first time in 1881. The English department taught Arabic and Persian along with English and Western culture and science. Within a few days, this department gained so much popularity that by 1883, out of 338 students in the madrasa, 202 students were from the Anglo-Persian department. In 1915, Dhaka Madrasah became High Madrasah after the New Scheme system of education was introduced by the government like other Madrasahs. In 1916, the Anglo-Persian department was separated and became Dhaka Govt. Muslim High School. In 1919, the Special Islamic Matriculation Examination and in 1921, the Special Islamic Intermediate Examination were introduced. Established in 1921, the institution was converted into an Islamic Intermediate College in 1923 to facilitate the admission of students from the Department of Islamic Studies of Dhaka University. In 1947 there were 4 classes in madrasa section and 2 classes in college section. Humanities were opened in 1957 and Science in 1970. On the recommendation of the National Education Commission in 1958, the madrasa classes were converted into secondary classes in 1962 and Dhaka Madrasa became known as the school department of Islamic Intermediate College. Then in 1968 the school was separated from the college and named Islamia Govt High School, Dhaka. The North-East School is still running on the ground floor of the main building of the college. After the separation of the school in 1968, the name of the college was also changed to Government Islamia College.Dhaka In 1972, the name was again changed to 'Kabi Nazrul Government College'. It has been known by this name until now. The number of books in the library is about 30 thousand. At present 109 teachers (including attachments) are working in 17 departments of the college. The journey started with 169 students in 1974, but currently the number of students in this institution is about 21,000.
